W celu uczczenia 158. rocznicy wybuchu Powstania Styczniowego, władze Powiatu Kolskiego na czele z Wicestarostą Sylwestrem Chęcińskim i Miasta Koła na czele z Burmistrzem Krzysztofem Witkowskim, wraz z kilkoma innymi delegacjami, stanęły u stóp pomnika „Bojownikom o wolność ojczyzny” usytuowanego nad zalewem rz. Warty, by kultywować pamięć o bohaterach tego zrywu narodowego i wszystkich, którzy walczyli o Polskę.
Powstanie Styczniowe wybuchło 22 stycznia 1863 r. w Królestwie Polskim przeciwko Rosji. Miało charakter wojny partyzanckiej, w której stoczono ok. 1200 bitew i potyczek. Jedną z nich była bitwa pod Kołem – 6 maja 1863 r., podczas której oddział Edmunda Taczanowskiego zmusił do wycofania nacierających Rosjan. Choć zakończyło się klęską, rozszerzyło i umocniło polską świadomość narodową przyczyniając się do odzyskania niepodległości w 1918 r. Walki na naszych ziemiach rozpoczęły się 10 lutego 1863 roku pod Cieplinami. W powstaniu brali udział powstańcy listopadowi. Następstwo pokoleń przyniosło Powstanie Warszawskie.
Każdego roku w Kole kultywowana jest pamięć tego największego zrywu, który choć zakończył się klęską, znacząco wpłynął na przyszłe pokolenia dążące do niepodległości. Z Koła pochodziło wielu uczestników powstania, których potomkowie bywali w naszym mieście przy wielu lokalnych uroczystościach, m.in. sesji popularnonaukowej „Powstanie Styczniowe na Ziemi Kolskiej – w 150. rocznicę zrywu narodowego”, będącej ważnym elementem całorocznych obchodów jubileuszu tego wydarzenia czy wystawy tematycznej zorganizowanej kilka lat temu w Muzeum Technik Ceramicznych. Na pamiątkę powstania, przy wejściu do sali sesyjnej Ratusza, znajduje się obraz zatytułowany „Bój powstańczy w Kole 6 maja 1863 r.” autorstwa naszego lokalnego artysty Zdzisława Biernata.
– Powstańcy styczniowi kilkakrotnie „odwiedzali” nasze miasto, pierwszy oddział pojawił się już w lutym 1863 r., słynna potyczka miała miejsce 6 maja w pobliżu Zalewu Rzeki Warty, najzacieklejsze boje odbyły się o młyn znajdujący się obok Klasztoru OO. Bernardynów. W tym miejscu został ranny kpt. Kazimierz Unrug, a 8 maja zmarł w klasztorze, gdzie wówczas mieścił się lazaret. Zginęło jeszcze kilku powstańców, ale walka była dla nich zwycięska, a oddziały rosyjskie wycofały się w kierunku Turku. Dopiero nazajutrz, 7 maja, oddziały gen. Taczanowskiego ruszyły w kierunku Ignacewa, gdzie poniosły ogromną klęskę – wspominał kolski włodarz, znawca i pasjonat historii, który nie tylko złożył symboliczną wiązankę kwiatów i zapalił znicz przy pomniku, ale i krótko porozmawiał z obecnymi o chlubnej przeszłości naszego miasta.
